Control Systems Engineer

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are seeking experienced Control Systems Engineers at either level 3 or 4 to join our Plutonium Science and Manufacturing team to develop and implement designs and install, maintain and support control systems. At the higher level, you may also independently develop and direct projects, provide control system technical guidance and provide electrical training, technical guidance and operational assistance to other technologists, technicians and engineers in the planning, installation, integration, operation and maintenance of control systems.


  • Master’s degree in engineering and 6-12 years of related experience; Ph.D. preferred
  • Thorough knowledge and experience applying and demonstrating engineering design cycle principles, including requirements gathering, design, implementation, debugging, testing and documentation
  • Ability to define deliverables and lead projects, initiatives and new technology product line strategies
  • Experience in the design and development of computer-based data acquisition systems, such as Allen Bradley/Rockwell Software programmable logic controllers (PLCs), SCADA and industrial computers
  • Experience in the design, installation, modification and maintenance of industrial control systems
  • Experience writing a wide variety of quality assurance related documents
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70, 70E and 79
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of electronics, instrumentation and control systems hardware and software
  • Experience working in a non-reactor nuclear facility
  • Knowledge of control and data acquisition theory and instrumentation hardware

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced experience leading a technical team of 5+ people for at least 5 years
  • Demonstrated record of control systems design and/or publications of major importance
  • Experience identifying, promoting and developing appropriate new technical capabilities
  • Experience serving in a consultative role to senior-level management and governmental management representatives
  • Active DOE level Q clearance and HRP-certified
  • Electrical Safety Officer training
