Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are currently seeking several individuals to join us as members of the Building Automation and Operational Technology team within the Institutional Facilities (IF) Group which includes a small dynamic team of controls engineers, computer scientists, IT, networking and electronics and field technicians. You will work closely with and support Operations and the Sustainability Program goals for energy efficiency through the ongoing maintenance and operation of the building automation systems and building performance analytics.

Operations Specialist  - IRC85624
You will perform Facility Operations, including maintaining primary oversight of building automation systems, coordinating maintenance/modification activities on their assigned systems and focusing on maintaining reliable, cost-effective functionality of facilities and systems in support of IF customers and key institutional stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree plus 4 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing and knowledge of facility operations to include managing mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, HVAC/refrigeration, conveyance and BAS systems
  • Professional knowledge of HVAC installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance
  • Basic knowledge of troubleshooting and repair of digital controls systems, including unit controllers, sensors, actuators and motors
  • Good understanding of hazardous-energy control, including LOTO application practices and configuration control


Desired Qualifications:

  • Current or recent Journeyman’s Refrigeration or Electrical License
  • Vendor certification (i.e., Honeywell, Train or Logic)


Controls Engineer – IRC86204 and Controls Engineering Technologist – IRC86205
You will join our dynamic teams to provide technological solutions and support for data collection, analysis, dashboarding, design modifications and other technical support to Utilities. This will include programming BAS databases and sequences of operation; monitoring, troubleshooting and tuning control systems; and modifying programming and graphics. Assisting HVAC field and maintenance technicians in the installation, repair, replacement and testing of various components or systems is also required.

Education Qualification for Controls Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or at least 6 years of practical work experience; an advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired


Education Qualification for Controls Engineering Technologist:

  • Associate’s degree in electronics, mechanical systems, computer technology, air conditioning or similar field or equivalent military occupational specialty plus 5 years of industry experience or 10 years of experience in servicing electronic or mechanical systems in the HVAC industry


Combined Qualifications for Controls Engineer and Control Engineering Technologist:

  • Certification or demonstration of knowledge in at least one of the following building automation systems: Trane, Automated Logic, Alerton, Johnson Controls, Siemens or Niagara AX
  • Knowledge and some practice in various types of programming languages (e.g. JAVA, Python, MATLAB, etc.), both line and block (graphical), and general understating of IP networks
  • A working knowledge of typical metrics and formulas used for building energy calculations
  • Demonstrated working experience with related industry codes/standards


Desired Qualifications for Controls Engineer and Control Engineering Technologist:

  • Experience with industrial control systems, metering devices and remote monitoring
  • Knowledge of information technology architecture and communications networks for industrial control systems, including familiarity with BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, MSTP and ARCNET protocols
  • Experience either with energy and HVAC audits or commissioning work
  • CEM or LEED certification
  • Experience with Test and Balance
