The Integrated Building Performance (IBP) Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a senior buildings scientist to join our team in delivering high-impact results to the nation’s complex and critical decarbonization and energy efficiency challenges.    

As part of our research group, you will be among team members based in Oak Ridge working at the Building Technologies Research & Integration Center (BTRIC), the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) only designated User Facility dedicated to R&D in building technologies. The IBP Group focuses on applied research and technology deployment assessments in the commercial building market. We support the US DOE Building Technologies Office’s Commercial Buildings Integration program efforts to advance the deployment of cost-effective building technologies that reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and save money.   Our team works closely with other research groups in BTSD that focus on building envelopes, HVAC equipment, multifunctional equipment integration as well as sensors and controls.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead multi-year research projects on commercial buildings technology deployments focused on decarbonization and energy efficiency
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams of research staff including assistant and associate level research staff, technicians and postdoctoral researchers and external collaborators
  • Present and report research results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and program reviews
  • Work with other ORNL researchers to develop a long-term commercial buildings technical focus and strategy that leverages and aligns with other capabilities within the laboratory
  • Write and coordinate the submission of research and development proposals that support of BTO’s goals and leverage ORNL’s signature strengths
  • Serve as technical liaison to DOE sponsors, private sector building component manufacturers, commercial building portfolio owners, and technical teams representing government-industry partnerships
  • Mentor students, post-docs, and early career research staff


Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering with a minimum of 10 years work experience in building science
  • A record of excellence in building science research as evidenced through highly cited peer-reviewed journal publications
  • Demonstrated experience in developing new research project proposals, executing research and presenting results
  • Active leadership role (e.g. committee voting status) in professional societies
